GEORGE NEGROPONTE

George Negroponte was born in NYC in 1953; he studied painting at Yale University with Bernard Chaet and William Bailey. Since 1980 he has had twenty one-person shows at numerous galleries: Brooke Alexander Gallery, John Good, Jason McCoy Inc., Kouros Gallery, Keyes Art in New York City, and P37 and Skoufa Gallery in Athens, Greece. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions at galleries and museums worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He has been reviewed by every major art periodical, including The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, The New Yorker, The New Yorker, BOMB Magazine, ARTnews, and The New Criterion. He was Co-Chairman of The Board of The Drawing Center from 1997-2002 and was appointed the institution's first president in 2002.

George Negroponte writes extensively about art for the exhibits he organizes for Keyes Art; in the past, his other curatorial efforts were presented at The Drawing Center, The New York Studio School, Parsons School of Design, Yale University, and Guild Hall. More recently, his writing focuses on a period in American painting, bridging the years between The New York School in the late 1950s to artists who sidestepped Pop art in the 1960s, such as Lester Johnson, Fay Lansner, and Nela Arias-Misson. Negroponte enjoys deliberating on the teachings of Hans Hofmann and his students.

BOMB Magazine published an Oral History interview with Claude Lawrence and George Negroponte in June of 2022, delving into the remarkable career of the jazz musician turned painter. Mr. Negroponte lives in Springs with his wife, three sons, two dogs, and two cats.
