VIRVA HINNEMO

Virva Hinnemo was born in Helsinki, Finland, and studied art at Parsons School of Design. She was featured in Affinities for Abstraction at The Parrish Museum. She has had solo shows with Anita Rogers Gallery in NYC, Ille Arts in Amagansett, Halsey McKay in East Hampton, and Keyes Art in Sag Harbor. Hinnemo has won awards from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, The American-Scandinavia Foundation, and The Finnish Artists in Sweden.

Jennifer Landes of The East Hampton Star wrote about Hinnemo’s exhibit at Anita Rogers in 2018:

A quick pass might offer hints of Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, even Mark Tobey, but it wouldn’t reveal the depth of the artist’s unique approach. Seemingly just black and white with shadings of gray, almost all of them have some color in their underpainting.

Dense layers of paint highlight Hinnemo’s paintings, applied directly and deliberately. Her images vacillate from the real to the imagined in a quiet drama revealing a unique and fresh sensibility. Her work has been described as “straightforward, not-to-be-denied, and purposeful. Hinnemo teaches art to children throughout the Hamptons and lives in Springs with her husband and three children.
